Avondale was one of the earliest racially-integrated Chicago neighborhoods. Among the positive results of this early integration are Avondale's thriving Polish communities. Jackowo, also known as the Polish Village, is one of Chicago's most vibrant Polish communities. The neighborhood contains dozens of Polish sausage shops, bakeries, and restaurants. Avondale is also home to a many other ethnic groups, evidenced by the range of international cuisine offered.
