Of all Chicago neighborhoods, Douglas is among the greatest centers of African-American history. In the 19th century, Douglas was home to Chicago's largest African-American church congregation. Chicago's first black-owned bank opened in Douglas in 1908. From the 1920s through the 1940s, Douglas became a major center of black business and cultural life. For students of African-American history and other disciplines, Douglas offers many educational opportunities. Schools, community colleges, and universities are found throughout the Douglas area, including Illinois Institute of Technology, Shimer College, and the Vandercook College of Music.
