Greater Grand Crossing is a Chicago neighborhood 8 miles south of the Loop with a rich history as one of the city's transportation hubs. Its proximity to the railroads first attracted residents in the mid-ninteenth century. Due to the rail system, Greater Grand Crossing experienced significant growth in the late nineteenth century. In the early 20th century, South Park Commissioners acquired 17 acres of land to design and build a neighborhood park, including swimming pools, a fieldhouse, playing field, and playground. In 1934, Greater Grand Crossing was named part of the Chicago Park District.
