New Mexico's economy is in the middle of a robust transition. Its growing technology and government sectors provide jobs to 25 percent of the state's employed workers. State housing prices have remained low--$125,500 on average compared with $167,500 for the nation. The government sector is larger in New Mexico than in other states, mostly due to federal agencies and programs located there, specifically two national defense laboratories and three large Air Force bases.

Degree programs, from medical assisting and computer technology certification to liberal arts and M.B.A. studies, are available at colleges and universities throughout the state, but two main areas generally attract a larger number of students for lifestyle and job opportunities--Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Albuquerque is New Mexico's largest metropolis, from which many companies in the state operate. Santa Fe is a relaxed, well-known tourist destination that offers many opportunities in the hospitality and leisure industry.
