Virginia is one of the wealthiest states in the South, and also one of the most diverse. Though primarily rural, the northern part of the state is very urban and considered part of the Washington, DC metropolitan area. This helps Virginia maintain a diverse and successful economy, marked by production in all sorts of different areas, from soy and tobacco to computer chips. With its close proximity to the U.S. capital, government is an extremely important part of Virginia's economy. This is especially true for defense contracting: the Pentagon is located in Arlington, Virginia.

Loudoun County and Fairfax County in Northern Virginia have the second and third highest median household incomes of all US counties. Virginia is home to several military bases, including the world's largest naval base at Norfolk. Virginia draws a fair number of tourists each year, particularly to its wine region and the Blue Ridge Mountains.
