Washington's economy has been growing at a faster rate than the national average. While traditional industries such as logging are still strong, they no longer provide much expansion. The state's recent economic gains have come from modern technological industries. One of Washington's primary employers is the aerospace industry. Boeing Commercial Airplane Company, the largest exporter in the United States, is based in Washington, and the state has the highest number of aerospace jobs per capita in the country.

Washington is also a major producer of biotechnology, electronics and telecommunications, and is home to industry giant Microsoft, among thousands of others. The port cities on the western coast are import-export hubs as well as bases for numerous commercial fishing operations. Tourism to Washington's major cities, particularly Seattle, and many national parks also provide nearly 150,000 jobs for residents.
